After playing along with Skye's Banished Let's Play I have a hard time getting excited about a map that doesn't start on an island. I found this seed from an anonymous poster online with a simple description of 'Your welcome'. It's a killer map. I used hard starting conditions, but having just completed my Mountain Man achievement I set climate to fair to mix things up a bit.
Using the 'firewood economy' model I immediately developed a quad-port trading district to speed the flow of stone and iron needed for expansion.
I built a second quad-port in my first expansion settlement (more compact but less character than the first). It was the first thing I built in this new area with builders commuting from the starter island.
Opening all 8 trade windows and micromanaging against the inventory window for couple of years (on 10x speed) allows me to achieve a steady and balanced flow of desired resources. I've had to rebalance a couple of times my population has grown, but it's easier when you don't need to hunt for and select the right port on the map.
I set a pair the ports to warehouse food provisions instead of auto-trade, which has allowed me to flood the market with mutton and berries on a couple of occasions when stock was low.
A paused, partially constructed church in a remote corner makes for a nice ancient castle ruins. I made the workers carry all the materials from town so as not to disturb the nearby rock formations. Only one labor died in it's construction (a fair price IMO).
